NEDA- EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN MUSIC
Christos Barbas: ney, voice, Viktoria Taskou: oud, voice,
Giorgos Papaioannou: violin, cello, Pavlos Spyropoulos: double bass.
Christos Barbas, Victoria Taskou, George Papaioannou and Pavlos Spyropoulos are four young musicians with a broad experience in the fields of Ottoman & traditional modal music as well as Byzantine, Baroque and classical music. From the contact with these musical worlds comes their urge to merge seemingly diverse timbres into a new personal sound. Choosing an acoustic and minimal combination of instruments (Oud, Violin, Ney, Voice, Contrabass) they present a series of totally new, original compositions that are both folk and classical, traditional and modern, creating a magical combination of sounds that connects the soundscapes of Greece with Middle Eastern and European traditions. Taksim (improvisation) is a characteristic element of their live performances. It is used to introduce the diverse atmospheres and energies of each mode (makam), to explore the various melodic motives and ideas their compositions contain, as well as to present the special sound timbres of the instruments.
