DUO CORNEILLIE-DEBEL Tenor & Piano play Schumann
Duo Corneillie-Debel takes you on a journey through the finest song cycles by German romantic composer Robert Schumann.
Dichterliebe (op. 48), based on the poems of Heinrich Heine, tells the story of a young man in love, but with a broken heart. He has to cope with the fact that his loved one continues her life, while he stays in despair.
In Liederkreis (op. 39), Schumann composed music for 12 poems by Joseph von Eichendorff. The content is highly romantic, with nature, loneliness and love as the main subjects.
De last set of songs are based on 6 poems by Nikolaus Lenau (op. 90). Schumann himself added a requiem, an old Catholic poem which he dedicated to the (as Schumann thought) deceased poet Lenau. Ironically, Lenau died shortly before the première of the song cycle.
Daan Corneillie and Jan Debel met eachother some years ago at a music academy where they were both teaching. Since that moment, they decided to explore the song repertoire together, including both known and rather unknown works in their program.
